| The
best kind of financial independence is
not necessarily that which goes with being a celebrity
or filthy rich. It is perhaps the financial
independence that allows us to fulfill our dreams. To be ourselves,
to self-actualise. We seek it here, we seek it there. It is
a quest that goes on for most of our life. Usually we fail.
It is the search for true financial independence. Sadly, the
majority of us more time seeking financial independence than
we do living our dreams.
What does financial independence really mean? For sure, it
means different things to different people. It depends on
your circumstances. A common misconception is that it means
being rich. But having enough money is only a part of the
financial independence equation.
For instance you can be very well off but be as miserable
as sin. Your personal life could be a mess, or your wealth
could be threatened at any time by circumstances beyond your
control. Thus you spend your days worrying rather than being
happy.
So if it’s not money alone that makes us happy what
is it?
How about this definition? True financial independence and
happiness is having more money than you need and also having
the time to enjoy it. In other words, wealth alone is not
the answer. You must have the time to enjoy your money, or
else what’s the point? The sad fact is in our quest
for money we trade in the most precious and irreplaceable
commodity life gives us, time.
But there is another way. It is proven and has brought many
people happiness and true financial freedom. You work diligently
for a few years, either serious part time or full time. You
then reach a point after a few years where you work a lot
less (or even not at all!) for the rest of your life thanks
to a powerful residual income. Thus you have a lot more time
to do the things you choose to do.
It’s called owning your own life and as you’ll
find out it really can happen to you.
